ARCHIVE - 2/7/07:
January Green Day Report
Green Day January Update
It's funny when you hear people you don't really know talking about
Green Day, and they'll say something like, "oh Green Day is so cool,"
or "Green Day used to be cool before they totally sold out," or "I
know Green Day's super mainstream, but man, do they put on a good
live show." It's funny because little do they know how much of an
opinion YOU, the unassuming motherfucker in the corner, have to say
about Green Day. And you're not even going to get into it, because
there's really no point, but wow, if you did, you'd make quite the
impression.
And this has to do with what?
Relevance? You make ask. To do with Green Day news how? you might
say. It's simply interesting to observe, in this, the still new year
of 2007, how Green Day has officially become insanely famous and successful.
Which just goes to show you about life, in a number of ways, so let's
count them:
Way #1
You're never so washed up that you can't claw your way back to the
top. When Green Day put out 'Nimrod' it was like, "okay, cool," and
then "Warning!" was fine, and then 'International Superhit' and you
knew it was all over, and then 'Shenanigans' and it was like "remember
when that band was super famous?" And now they're more famous than
ever, which just goes to show you about life.
Way #2
Sometimes, having your life's work ripped away from you (i.e. - the
original demos for the album that eventually became 'American Idiot,'
can be a good thing, which just goes to show you about life.
Way #3
Not all Americans are actually idiots. In a time when our own political
leaders are informing us that we suck (think John Kerry's "international
pariah" comment), Green Day have proven that there are a fuckload
of cool Americans that do not want to be idiots out there, which just
goes to show you about life.
Way #4
Fame and fortune don't have to turn you into a prick, you can use
your wealth and influence to help the world, i.e. help your wife become
a clothing designer, team up with the NRDC to remind punks everywhere
that deep down, punks are actually tree-hugging hippies, and continue
to speaking out about the corrupted-ness of your own country by not
letting everyone forget about Hurricane Katrina, which really showed
you what life could be like.
Tell Us Your Stories
Green Day have become icons. Everybody knows who they are and so you
hear them getting talked about all over the place, and they're in
the news all the time, but you know, deep down, that it's you, YOU!
that's been there all along, and it's almost like watching your friends,
or your children grow up and get famous, and you're all like, "yeah,
but I knew them when…" Which is the point: Green Day news is as much
about YOU as it is about them. There would be no Green Day story without
the stories of the Green Day fans, so let us know about your Green
Day stories, post them here because they're important, and we can
start this amazing collection of crazy tales and fantasies and insider
news, lies and rumors and wild speculations. Your stories could make
this Green Day site the greatest thing on the internet, so tell them
to us.
New Year, New Green Day, Old, Dead Planet
It's a new year, and we're all getting comfortable with the new, ultra-famous,
enviro-crusader-style Green Day. People certainly seem to be feeling
good about jumping on the save-our-environment bandwagon with the
guys, which is awesome, because clearly it is being destroyed (the
environment, that is) and we're doing nothing about it and you know
that the coming apocalypse is going to be environmental, so it's always
nice to experience some effort to get people to WAKE UP! Fer example,
definitely check out the new NRDC Green Day myspace: http://www.myspace.com/greendaynrdc.
They've already got a ton of friends and a ton of comments, which
are actually from people that are concerned about the environment,
and not just Green Day fans. Probably this is because everyone is
freaked out about global warming. Snow in California, snow in Florida,
what in the buggardly fucking hell is going on? Which, of course,
is exactly what Green Day is trying to say, and there are a million
ways to get involved and make a different in your own community and
through the www.greendaynrdc.com website. Hmm, makes you wonder if
the new Green Day album will be all about the environment, kind of
like oldschool Dayglo Abortions, but probably not so dirty.
Adrienne Insider
One person who apparently has a good idea of what the new album with
be like is Adrienne Armstrong. In her interview with Punk Rock Confidential
last month, she mentioned that some of her favorite tunes these days
are "the new Green Day demos," which must mean that things are happening
in a speedy and productive fashion down at GDHQ. Oh, to be a fly on
the wall… Anyway, besides an occasional gem, the PRC interview is
mostly about fashion, which may only be of interest if you are America's
Next Top Punk Rock Model. However, you can check the interview out
here: http://www.greenday.net/cc.html, if you are so inclined.
Re: Issues Re: Reissues
You can only use the word 'issues' so much before it starts look really
fucking weird… The reissues of '1029 Smooth' and 'Kerplunk' FINALLY
came out this month. The sound quality may be moderately improved,
but otherwise they are basically identical to previous reissues. Woot!
Hey, if you don't already own them, and you're not a Starwars-style
freak about having the original editions, they'll be more than worth
picking up. You can read a reasonably insightful review of the reissues
here: http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/40578/Green_Day_1039_Smoothed_Out_Slappy_Hours_Kerplunk
Awards and How to Drown in Them
There hasn't actually been too much news coming out of the Green Day
camp this month. But since it is, after all, the new year, they have
received their share of retrospective 2006 accolades. 'Bullet in a
Bible' was the best-selling music DVD of 2006, and Billie Joe was
named one of the top 25 best guitarists in the Bay Area of all time.
That puts him up there with Carlos Santana, Kirk Hammett, and Jerry
Garcia. Again, note the punks-hippies connection. And that's the story
of Green Day this month. The thrills, the chills, the freaks with
gills, the chicks with pills and the dudes named Billie, alright,
okay, this is just getting silly, all the motherfuckers in the house
say 'heeeyyy,' see you next month with more news about Green Day.
