ARCHIVE - 2/14/06:
Boulevard of Broken Dreams
Holy fucking Green Day kick ass! The guys took home the award for Record of the Year last night at the 2006 Grammy Awards for Boulevard of Broken Dreams. They beat out Mariah Carey (We Belong Together), Gorillaz featuring De La Soul (Feel Good Inc.), Gwen Stefani (Hollaback Girl), and Kanye West (Gold Digger).
The whole band was there with their wives and girlfriends and producer Rob Cavallo to accept the award. Billie Joe was pretty nervous up there on stage, and who wouldn't be? The Record of the Year award is a big fucking deal. It's not rock album of the year, or country album of the year, it's overall fuck-lameass-manufactured-pop-music-because-Green-Day-is-the-shit Record of the Year.
Billie Joe pointed out the importance of this recognition in his acceptance speech by saying, "I just want to acknowledge that pop radio playing rock music is a very big deal to me, so thank you very much."
It kinda makes you think, actually, because clearly, in making this album a huge success, Green Day has had to say goodbye to their punk roots to some degree. Grammy reviews have even called Billie Joe a "former punk," in their reports on the show. But what the hell, if Green Day had to sacrifice their punk props in order to make rock and roll mainstream again, it was worth it. Another Grammy shut out for stupid Mariah Carey, fuck yeah!
Billie Joe was also up on stage presenting for Rock Album of the Year alongside Gwen Stefani. Billie Joe did a little tribute to Les Paul, who's in the hospital right now, and there was this awesome moment where Gwen was like "last year Green Day took home the Grammy for an incredible work of art called 'American Idiot,'" and the whole crowd just went fucking nuts.
All in all, it was an incredible night for Green Day. And who knows, maybe this heralds the start of a new era in which the Grammy Awards will tone down the extreme suck factor and start showing some respect to all the rock and punk and metal out there that is actually saying something important.
Congratulations Green Day! Rock on for-fucking-ever, bitches!
