December Green Day News
Ringing in the New Year
At the end of an old year, a lot of people like to do the whole retrospective thing. What were the 100 greatest moments for Green Day over the last year? What about Billie Joe’s top 10 hottest public appearances?
Yeah. As much as I know these lists to be blog PR gold, the truth is that I’ve got too much cool stuff to tell you about re: what’s been going on with Green Day over the last month, to waste paper on ‘best of’ lists.
Green Day’s Night At The Grammys
If you weren’t buried under a pile of Christmas consumer crap at the beginning of December, then you probably caught the whole ‘My Night at the Grammys’ special.
All in all, it was pretty freakin’ lame UNTIL Green Day took it home and won the number one spot on the countdown. MEANING: Green Day’s performance of ‘American Idiot’ was the GREATEST GRAMMY PERFORMANCE OF ALL TIME. Yeah bitch!
Check out the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldas-jZtyNc
One of the best parts of the whole circus was that they actually had Billie Joe on the show talking about Green Day’s performance, and about the Grammys in general. Cool, but also kind of freaky. Watching it, I got the feeling that winning a Grammy puts you in some kind of weird yes-man club where you’ve got to talk about how great the Grammys are for the rest of your life.
Speaking Of Scoring Grammys…
And in case you need more proof that the guys are officially rock royalty, just a few days after the awards show special, Green Day was once again nominated for a shiny golden gramophone, this time for their cover of ‘Working Class Hero.’
The nomination is in the ‘Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals’ category, putting Green Day up against such guitar heroes as that guy from American Idol, that Pearl Jam rip-off band from Canada, U2, and the White Stripes. U2 are also nominated for a track off the ‘Instant Karma’ album, so the competition should be fierce.
No word yet on whether Green Day will be making an appearance on the show. Check it out February 10th.
Happy Birthday, Tre!!!
On December 9th, Mr. Tre Cool celebrated his 35th birthday. No word has come down the pipes regarding any arrests or international incidents, which begs the questions: Is Tre getting old? Are the guys settling down? Weary of the limelight, will it be months, or even years, before we see anything new from an aging Green Day?
A Little Sidenote
Maybe Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre are getting old. After all, there’s only one other tiny bit of Green Day news to report this month. Insignificant really. Not even worth your time, unless you’re interested in…A NEW GREEN DAY SIDE PROJECT!!!
AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
Foxboro Hot Tubs
A mysterious new band has just appeared on the scene called ‘Foxboro Hot Tubs.’ Here’s their MySpace Page: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=259726344
The ‘unknown’ band also has a website here: http://www.foxborohottubs.com/ but there’s not much to see. They had the site up with downloadable songs a few days ago, but now there’s nothing to see but a clock. If you want access to the music, you can still find it by tagging "/noflash.html" on to the URL.
And why would you go to all this trouble? Probably because after you listen to some of the tracks posted on the Foxboro Hot Tubs’ MySpace page, you’ll have a sneaking suspicion that the lead singer sounds a lot like Billie Joe, and that the baseline sounds eerily like ‘dirnt dirnt dirnt.’
What Do They Sound Like?
Foxboro Hot Tubs doesn’t exactly play signature Green Day noise. In fact, they sound more like British 60s revival rock, hovering somewhere between Iggy Pop, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, and the Strokes. Weird, right? But through all the glam-pop-rock styles, you can still hear Billie Joe, loud and clear.
Why?
Of course, Green Day will neither confirm nor deny the rumors. Need more evidence? Here it is:
- Green Day has a history of releasing wacky mystery side projects, a la masked new wave weirdos, The Network.
- Foxboro is the swank neighborhood where Billie Joe lives.
- Word on the street is that an apartment complex across the street from Billie’s has these hot tubs you can sneak into to party at night. So ‘Foxboro hot tubs’ is the name of this secret party location.
- The cover art for the FHT release ‘Stop, Drop, and Roll,’ includes the goat’s head logo for the ‘Church of Lushtology,’ the religion subscribed to by The Network.
- Billie Joe admitted to having about 45 songs/song ideas in the works for the next album. It’s likely that the guys picked six that had a similar vibe to them and released the songs as FHT so they wouldn’t go to waste.
So, Are They Or Aren’t They?
In the end, the proof is in the Christmas pudding, as some old nutjob once said. The lead singer of FHT IS Billie Joe, and you can quote me on that. Is the rest of the band involved? What about Jason White? These details are still up for debate, and the truth may never come out.
No doubt we’ll learn more once the new Green Day album is released, and we see what kind of songs make the final cut. Will they sound anything like Foxboro Hot Tubs, or have the guys now gotten the whole retro thing out of their systems?
The only thing that’s fer sure fer sure is that 2008 will be a hella interesting year for Green Day and Green Day fans alike. Happy New Beers, everybody! Maybe we’ll run into each other sometime at a Foxboro Hot Tubs show. Concert details pending…pending… |
