Where to Get That Gangsta Shit
As you know, there's big, steaming piles of Green Day merch everywhere you look. Unfortunately, for the gourmand seeking a well-rounded meal, it's hard to find shit that's not "American Idiot," / "Bullet in a Bible" / Heart Grenade themed. Merch and music from before "American Idiot" can be hard to find, and anything from before "Dookie," almost impossible. Buuuuuuuuut, there are a few corners left to dig around in, when you find yourself especially hard up for your next fix.
If you're wondering why you can't get any of the stuff you want at local stores, it's because it's all online. Netsoundsmusic.com has got tons of great Green Day music, and all of their items are peer reviewed so you can divide the gold from the garbage.
Eli.com is also good for hunting down rarities. They've got a ton of European imports that you can't find anywhere else, which is kind of funny, what with Green Day being an American band and all. But it seems like the guys have released different versions of their albums in different countries all over the world. So, even though you can't find those rarities you're itching for at the local record store, online stores provide the added benefit of making the world your marketplace.
Of course, there's no better arena in which to find all that wacky memorabilia and those one of a kind concert tapes than on Ebay. While chain stores rush to sell "American Idiot" off, piece by piece, the rest of the world is unlocking its I-knew-them-when treasure houses and selling off Green Day history to the highest bidder. Any time anyone has some really crazy rare item, they invariably got it off Ebay.
If you're one of those unfortunate types that can't get their grimy little paws on a credit card or a Paypal account, then you should look into the world of trading. Every city has a shifty underground of some sort that trades in vinyl and other materials of interest to the fanatic. If your record store isn't carrying the good shit, then ask them who does. Odds are, they will know of some kind of get-together or underground network that trades in Green Day arcana. You've just got to find it. Let the crazy super fan within be your guide.
