July Green Day Report

It's a Green Day Movie Extravaganza!
Alright, alright, that was kind of mean. This isn't actually any fresh news on the Green Day movie itself, but holy shit, has there ever been a lot of Green Day in the movies this summer! Surf's Knocked Up
First, there was Knocked Up, hilarious movie of the summer. Near the beginning of the movie, the main character, who is an aunt, is driving her nieces to school, and she asks the kids what music they want to hear. The littlest kid in the car immediately starts screaming, "Green Day! Green Day! Green Day!" Obviously a funny little jab at Green Day's increasingly preteen audience.

Then there was Surf's Up, another, uh, adorable penguin movie, this time with an edgy pop culture theme! And what does that mean? It means Green Day HAS to be on the soundtrack!

Actually, although both "Holiday," and "Welcome to Paradise" are in the movie, neither of them are on the soundtrack. Weird!

More Than Meets the Eye?
Next, if you saw Transformers, you probably noticed a Nimrod poster in the main character's room. Those involved in the Green Day conspiracy theory circuit will automatically make the Shia LaBeouf connection: it's his room that has the poster in it in Transformers, AND he's the voice of the main character, Cody Maverick, in Surf's Up.

Soooo, is Shia a big Green Day lover, or is he just getting typecast as a Green Day fan? We'll have to see if there's any more covert GD references in the upcoming Indiana Jones movie…

Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da Da!!!
Finally, July saw the illustrious kickoff of The Simpsons Movie extravaganza, featuring Green Day's version of the theme song, which IS on the soundtrack. It starts off pretty cool, with this whole almost Rev. Horton Heat rockabilly-esque vibe, and ends with some "heys!" and "das!" which leaves you feeling the punkness, and the appreciation for irony, of Green Day by the end. Are you impressed by this cover, or what? Let us know what you think in the forum!

When you actually go to see the Simpsons Movie, you won't have to wait long for the GD cameo.

(SPOILER ALERT!)
Green Day's version of the intro song is what kicks off the movie, ending with them on a barge playing a concert for Springfield. Billie Joe is reading the lyrics - "Da da da da da!" - off a teleprompter and looking really bored.

At the end of the song, Billie Joe says, "alright, we've been playing for three and half hours, and now we'd just like a moment of your time to say something about the environment!" That's when everybody in Springfield starts booing and throwing shit. And Tre says, "but the pollution in your lake is eating our barge!" and they just boo louder. Finally, Green Day's barge collapses and they fall into Lake Springfield and die.

LOL.

All in all, the Green Day cameo makes for a pretty good statement about how most people feel regarding impending environmental devastation, which is that they're sick of hearing about it already, and they don't really give a fuck. Woot! Or wait, no, it's sad, very, very sad.

Green Day + The Simpsons + Save the Planet!
Actually, the whole movie is about environmental issues, and as Matt Groening pointed out in a recent interview - the Simpsons has always been about this topic. Homer, after all, works in a nuclear power plant, and Springfield is constantly having problems with things like the burning tire yard, three-eyed fish, and illegally dumping toxic waste.

Green Day was obviously clued into this running theme, because according to Groening, they were super interested in being in the movie when it was in production. James L. Brooks, for his part, heard they were interested, but found it impossible to get hold of them. "Green Day is harder to get on the phone than anyone you could think of," says Brooks. That means a lot coming from a guy who has worked with all of the most famous people on the planet!

Adeline in Big Cheese
Elusive as those crazy motherfuckers are, the UK's Big Cheese Magazine still managed to scoop Billie Joe and Adrienne up for an interview about Adeline Street. The interview is in the August issue of Big Cheese, if you can find it! If not, fear not, the article is mostly about fashion. Not so interesting, until the interviewer pops a question about the new Green Day album at the last minute.

This kind of question makes you think that Big Cheese was after a music interview all along, but they said they wanted to interview the couple about Adeline so that they could get Billie under the lens. Of course, Billie deflected the questions with typical flair, saying, "Umm…We have a shitload of songs right now. We're just trying to make it sound complete - like it all makes sense. In other words, I don't have a fucking clue!"

Ominous Ranting
It's no surprise that Green Day is taking their time with the next album. They are under crazy enormous pressure to match the success of American Idiot, but here's a newsflash: IT'S NEVER GONNA HAPPEN!!! Never in history has a band followed an album like American Idiot with something that equaled it, or better. Guaranteed it will be a good album, but all the fucking critics and stupid fad-fans out there are going to be saying it sucks and that Green Day has lost it. Luckily, our boys have been through this before with Dookie. Hopefully, they'll just do whatever they want to do and fuck what anybody else says.

I Wanna Be the Minority
Also this month, Spinner.com ranked the top 20 Protest Songs that Matter. Green Day came in at #19, with - surprisingly - the slightly less than massive hit song, Minority. Now, obviously this is an insanely awesome song, but it's an interesting pick when you've got stuff like American Idiot and Holiday to choose from.

Spinner claims they picked the song because it represents the moment when Green Day "goes explicitly political, pledging eternal allegiance to society's misfits, the downtrodden, and the outnumbered." And hey, they're right! Good on ya, Spinner, for not going with a more obvious selection.

Top Secret Insider Tip of the Month
Last but not least, all hardcore Green Day fans will want to pick up a copy of Transmissions, a new Green Day compilation CD released by a UK outfit this month. The CD has 22 rare and rare live tracks on it, such as The Judge's Daughter, and Who Wrote Holden Caufield? Also on the CD are videos of live performances, AND it comes with a sweet booklet all about every studio album Green Day has ever produced.

Unfortunately, this release is rare and hard to find.

Fortunately, if you know how to download shit off the internets, you can find Transmissions online released by scene group KzT. You can get it off Mininova, Demonoid, or from about a million other places.

Oh! But you didn't hear it here!

That is all.
